Rupea Fortress – location

Rupea Fortress is a fortified fortress located in Brasov County, Romania. It is located about 25 km west of Brasov, on the right bank of the Ribița River.

If you are leaving from Brasov, you can take the DN1 (E60) road west and then follow the signs for Râșnov and the Rupea fortress. The town of Rupea is divided into two sectors: the western one, also called Râșnov, and the eastern one, called Rupea.

If you don’t have your own car but want to visit this beautiful place, you have the following options:

  1. Take a taxi from Brasov. The journey takes about 30 minutes.
  2. Go to Brasov station and take the train to Făgăraș or Sighișoara. Get off at Râșnov or Rupea station. From there, you can reach Rupea Fortress by taxi or local bus.
  3. From the bus station in Brasov you can take a special bus route to the citadel. In this case, pay attention to the timetable.

Once there, you will be able to park your car in a specially designed parking lot located very close to the fortress. Entry costs 15 lei for adults and 8 lei for children under 18. If you want to benefit from the self-guid, you pay a difference of just 5 lei.

If you visit the fortress with a group of more than 20 adults, the price is 12 lei/person. Groups of 20 or more children also get a discount, at 5 lei per person.

Rupea Fortress – history

The Rupea Fortress is one of the oldest and most important fortresses in Transylvania, with documentary evidence dating back to the 14th century. It was originally built as a fortification on a high stone block overlooking the bridge over the Ribița River. From there you could see the surroundings, people and carriages approaching the fortress.

Although it was built in the 14th century, it continued to develop over time. The fortress of Rupea was enlarged in the 17th century and became a refuge for the local population.

Today, the Rupea Fortress is an important historical and cultural ensemble comprising three zones:

  • The Upper Fortress – this is the oldest one and includes the famous Tower of the Larders. This is a feature of the Saxon community that lived in the area. Here you can also see a well carved into the stone, more than 50 meters deep, which has not dried up to this day.
  • The Middle Citadel – comprises the Barred Tower, the Chapel and another Pentagonal Tower.
  • Lower Fortress – is the newest part of the fortress and dates back to the 18th century. Here you will see the fortress keeper’s dwelling and the military storehouse.

Rupea Fortress is included in the UNESCO World Heritage and is considered one of the most valuable historical monuments in Romania.
